Lacaune has for a long time exploited slate..
This activity was significant from an economic
standpoint and more particularly from an historical
and architectural point of view. The typical
houses of the region are slate-roofed.
In 1988, slate quarry owners diversified
their activity in order to adjust to a drop
in quarrying activity. In fact, as deposits
became less profitable, they were transformed
into processing sites for natural stone.
Today in the Lacaune area, two firms are
exploiting quarries :
-
Granier firm
has been processing stone since 1973, and
contributes to the development of housing,
gardens, and rural and urban planning. It
supplies large French firms, as well as European
and international firms. The materials are
marketed under various finishings.
- The
Garenq firm has diversified its activity
in civil engineering : sand, gravel for roads,
concrete....It exploits two quarries in Lacaune
today.
